The Snake in the Grass

One fall day I went to out into the yard and saw something, a snake in the grass and it was curved back upon itself in such a way that it looked more like a piece of jewelry than a living being. I quickly grabbed my camera to record it.

In church one of our readings was from Numbers 21 - Then the Lord told Moses to make a metal snake and put it on a pole, so that anyone who was bitten could look at it and be healed. So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone who had been bitten would look at the bronze snake and be healed. (these are verses 8 & 9 from the Good News version). How strange that Moses should make a serpent emblem atop a pole.

But is it really. The instinctive understanding of snakes is undeniable. I have seen the farmhouses in the deep south with no lawn because of the mortal fear a snake could approach unseen. I have seen monkeys throw sticks at snakes. I know the snake is a powerful symbol of evil in the bible, and is a powerful symbol of fertility among pagans.

There is a flying rainbow serpent that is especially important to my own cosmology. Her name is Ayida Wedo. OK, she only looks like that in my house.
