There is a temple in Kyoto called the
Kyo Mizu Dera - the Flowing Water Temple. It is set in the eastern Kyoto hills, the geography brings water flowing down into the visually arresting temple complex. It is a place rich in spiritual symbols, both for those following the path of the temple and for those who do not know it.
A basin collects the flowing waters at one level of the temple, and below the basin,
three streams pour down. The streams fall into another basin. The waters divide above and merge again below. There is a pile of - what I must call ladles because we do not have their equivalent in my culture, but not really ladles, water dippers, a utensil whose purpose is to dip water for drinking. The temples visitors line up and take a dipper.
The streams are There are diverse interpretations of the 3 streamsHealth, Wealth and Happiness. When one comes to the temple and stands with the crowd approaching the streams, one reflects on which two to choose. Dipper in hand, the pilgrim may drink from two of the streams.
Our choice, may not, in the end, matter. Still, it is our choice. Which would you leave out?
